There’s no question about it: the Adobe suite of graphic design and illustration software isn’t going anywhere anytime soon as the industry champion. Despite its quirks and teething problems that come with nearly every version update, it’s also arguably the best suite that money can buy.

The problem is, it takes a lot of money to buy it. Purchasing any of the CS titles outright can cost anywhere between $300 to $2,000 depending on which version you plump for, and Adobe’s attempts to convince people to pay on its new subscription model can cost anything between $50 to $200 every single month.

Obviously, that’s not an issue for those at NYFA’s illustration school who have got full access to the CS suite as part of their tuition program, but these are prohibitive price tags for everyone else. As such, today we’ll be exploring:

SVG-Edit

Platform: Any modern web browser

What It Is: An editing suite that deals solely in SVG (scalable vector graphics), which may sound like a restriction but is actually quite useful given the versatility of the format. If you’re scared of getting into SVG editing, you’re missing out, and this will break you in gently. Being a web browser platform also sounds limiting, but again, the speed at which it operates as a result is often superior to desktop counterparts.

Inkscape

Platform: Windows/Linux

What It Is: As with SVG-Edit, Inkscape is also geared towards those who want to work primarily in the SVG file format. Featuring both a clean and intuitive user interface, but packed with advanced features (such as alpha blending, object cloning and very accurate bitmap tracing), Inkscape comes as a highly recommended free alternative to Adobe Illustrator.

Affinity Designer

Platform: Mac

What It Is: Full rasterizing controls, layer management, multiple file format support, infinite zooming and every vector drawing tool you could ever hope for… Affinity Designer could quite possible become a true Illustrator killer. At the moment it’s only available to Mac users and the full version comes with a small price tag of $49.99 with free upgrades for two years, but the trial version is still remarkably functional and worth a shot if you’re looking for a free editor. It’s even worth it just to play with the infinite zoom function (yes, infinite.)

GIMP

Platform: All of them

What It Is: The one you’ve probably heard of. GIMP, an acronym for (GNU Image Manipulation Program) is more of an alternative to Photoshop rather than Illustrator since it its vector functions are limited, but what it can do in terms of image manipulation is second to none. Entirely free, open source, and loved by thousands (which have formed a very active online community since its release.). Have a look at the images on sosgame.com which used GIMP to create all the slot games images.

OpenOffice Draw

Platform: Windows, Linux, Mac

What It Is: While Apache’s flagship vector illustrator looks a little outdated these days, that’s purely a cosmetic concern. It’s still packed with features and is especially geared towards diagram and object manipulation. It also comes with the very handy feature of being able to create Flash (.swf) files from your document.

Serif DrawPlus (starter edition)

Platform: Windows

Illustrator mac free

What It Is: The starter edition of Serif’s DrawPlus is aimed towards the amateur illustrator given that A) it’s free software, and B) it’s very much a scaled-down version of the fuller release, but don’t let that put you off. It’s not limited in any way, there’s no pressure to shell out for the professional edition DrawPlus X6, and it does a good job of emulating its heavy weight cousins.

You might find you need to use a combination of the above free alternatives to Adobe Illustrator to get the job done, but for many people it’ll be worth the cash it saves and you may even find a new favorite. Got any others we need to check out? Drop a suggestion in the comments below!

Struggling whether or not to pay for Adobe Creative Cloud? In this article, you will find a few free Mac alternative design software and editing tools to Adobe Illustrator. Yes! FREE!

As a graphic designer myself, I totally understand how expensive these Adobe programs can get. I had to pay a couple of hundred dollars each year for Adobe Illustrator for school projects and work.

Well, Adobe Illustrator does offer a 7-day free trial, but after that, sadly, you’d better get your wallet ready. But don’t worry, after hours of researching and testing, I have found 5 free editing tools (for Mac users) that you can use without paying a ton.

Free Illustrator Alternatives for Mac

Design, it’s all about your good ideas! If you are looking to create some simple design, the following Mac user-friendly editing tools are easy to use and practical for basic creative work. Actually, you can create your art even faster using some of these alternatives.

1. Inkscape

Inkscape, which many designers believe is the best alternative to Adobe Illustrator, is free open-source design software. It provides most of the basic drawing tools that AI has. Such as shapes, gradients, paths, groups, text, and much more.

Just like Illustrator, Inkscape is great for creating vectors and it’s compatible with SVG. So, you can resize the vector without blurring it. You can save your design in different formats like SVG, EPS, PostScript, JPG, PNG, BMP, or others.

Yup, sounds like it’s almost perfect for designer pros. But some users complain that it works slowly and often crashes when you are working on larger files.

2. Gravit Designer

Gravit Designer is a full-featured vector design program suitable for different kinds of design works. You can use it on a web browser, or download a copy to your computer. The browser version is already quite good though. Save some space on your disk!

Gravit offers many tools that are essential for graphic design. One of the features I would say is even more convenient than Adobe Illustrator is that it has most of the basic size info set up already. So, it saves your time to do research on sizing.

This alternative can make your design dream come true without spending costing you one cent. I mean it does have the Pro version for which you have to pay, but the free version should be more than enough for basic design jobs.

3. Vecteezy

You probably have heard of Vecteezy? Many people find stock vectors on it. But you know what? You can actually create your own design or re-work the existing vectors as well.

It might be hard for a graphic designer to create something from scratch. No worries. Vecteezy has many ready-to-use vectors and different type-faces that can give you some good ideas to start.

With essential tools for graphic design such as pen tools, shapes, lines, and color-picker, you’ll get the vector you want in just a matter of practice and patience. Nothing complicated. Design is all about colors and shapes.

Although it’s a free graphic design program, you do need an account to save your work. Another thing about these kinds of web tools is that it can be a pain when you work on larger files. It might get really slow or even freeze the browser.

4. Vectr

Vectr is another free alternative browser vector design tool to Adobe Illustrator. It has all the basic tools you need to create a vector, including pen tools, lines, shapes, colors, text, and you can also import images and work on them on your Vectr artboard.

If you seriously have zero ideas about design or don’t know where to start, don’t worry. You can learn the basics quickly from the free tutorials on its website. Easy!

Just a reminder, Vectr is a very simple design tool, so it doesn’t have many advanced features that Adobe Illustrator offers. It’s recommended for newbies or anyone who wants to create a simple vector design. Another thing is that you will need to create an account to save your work.

5. Canva

Canva is an amazing online editing tool for creating posters, logos, infographics, and many other designs. It’s so easy and convenient to use. Because it offers so many ready-to-use templates, vectors, and fonts. You can create artwork in less than 30 mins easily.

Another feature I find very impressive is the auto color-picker tool. When you upload an image or select a template, it shows the color tones and suggested colors in the color window. This tool really saves your time and your work when you have no idea what colors to use.

One of the downsides of the free version is that you cannot save the image in high quality. If you use it for digital content, go ahead. However, for printing in large size, it’s quite tricky.

Final Words

Adobe Illustrator is still the most popular graphic design program that professional designers use despite its cost. But you are a newbie, or only need a couple of nice posters for work or a simple vector logo, the free alternatives to AI I mentioned above should be more than enough.

Have fun creating!
